Around the Outer Wall of Gormenghast lay the dwellings of the Bright Carvers[1].

Within the wall a few feet above the ground was a shelf of the same stone as the wall, painted white and jutting forward from east to west for two or three hundred feet[2].

TraditionsEdit

Each year on the morning first of June, all of the Bright Carvers were allowed to enter the castle for the judgement of their carvings. They would be judged by the Earl of Groan at some point through the day and three chosen. Those unchosen would be taken to the courtyard beneath the Lord Groan's western balcony while the three chosen would be displayed on the ballistrade of the balcony before being taken to the Hall of Bright Carvings[3].
