Each year on the evening of the first of June, the three carvings chosen by the Earl of Groan would be displayed on the ballistrade of Lord Groan's western balcony as a gong beat three times, before being taken to the Hall of Bright Carvings[1].
Beneath the balcony was a courtyard[2].
